Paonia State Park, at an elevation
of 6,500 feet, offers a 334 surface acre reservoir with campsites,
vault toilets and a concrete boat ramp. It is surrounded by the
Gunnison National Forest, Delta County's Volunteer Park, just
outside of town, is the home of local little league baseball and
will soon have state of the art soccer fields.
Within a short drive of town you can
experience great cross-country skiing, hiking, boating, rafting,
camping, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, downhill skiing and
off-road vehicle fun. Numerous snowmobile areas with lodges are also
nearby
As a
focal point of back roads and trails leading into forest, wilderness
and grazing lands, this town is the site of a US Forest Service
District Ranger office.
Hunters from all over the nation, singly
or assisted by local guides, outfit in town before fanning into the
mountains in quest of elk, deer and bear. Trout fishing is excellent
in high lakes, beaver ponds and countless streams; birds and small
game are plentiful. |
